Roughnecks operate cranes, run drilling engines and pipes, and are in general given more skilled tasks and paid more for doing them. Several years of work as a roughneck are enough to pass to the next level, which is that of derrick hand, or derrickman. The Derrick hands are responsible for the drilling mud and the mud pumps.
